I have always loved the elements and the design of a Japanese garden. The structures, the trees, the water. They all come together to make such a visual treat and an appealing setting.

We don’t have a big yard, so we’ve created this Japanese / Asian garden in one small area in our backyard using the basic traditional elements, but also adding some other features we enjoy.

First important element – Water.

The first thing I built when creating this garden was the waterfall with a pond. The sound of the splash of the waterful provides a peaceful and relaxing ambience. The birds love to take baths in the little stream. Originally we stocked the small pond with goldfish. Last winter’s extreme cold snap did them in. The rock and stone surrounding the waterfall are also an important element to the design.

Second important element – Evergreen trees and bushes.

We have a variety of evergreens which makes for more visual interest. Long needle pine trees, arborvitaes, low growing junipers and yews. Taller plants are best toward the back usually. Occasionally we add something different for variety such as a dark leafed hosta.

Third – Structures.

The most important piece of statuary is the Pagoda. Strategically placed in between the other elements, with a prominent position, this makes a statement that this is an Japanese garden. Other statues we include are a round bowl fountain, a square shaped bird bath, and metal cranes. All have a definite Oriental style. For the backdrop to the garden I used a lattice design that is vertical and horizontal. This is typical of Japanese buildings and fences. Behind the waterfall is an arch that is a bit like the Japanese Torii gate, but with a different design.

Finally, we add some color. We place pots with red flowers around – Begonias, Impatiens and Salvia. A couple of ferns hang in the back.
